PortsCenter Episode 6: Resident Evil (Game Boy Color)
Last week, PortsCenter focused on a game that wasn’t really a port. Now this week’s episode focuses on a port that was never released. Just what the hell’s going on over at PortsCenter HQ?
I kid though. This week, Ben Paddon takes a look at the recently unearthed, long ago cancelled, Game Boy Color port of Resident Evil. While Capcom did eventually release Resident Evil Gaiden for the GBC, that game was a completely original spin-off. The game discussed at length here was a room-for-room, puzzle-for-puzzle (or close to it) remake of the 1996 PlayStation classic.
The game was about 90 percent finished before Capcom shelved it, so the unfinished code that somehow leaked out a year or so ago is surprisingly playable. There are plenty of glitches and unfinished bits to work around, but the mansion, puzzles, and zombies all seem to be here.
There are also some pretty nifty technical tricks at work, which Ben goes into further detail on in the video. Watch it, won’t you?
