How About Retro Reviews?

As I’m thinking of different feature articles to try out, one I’d like to take a shot at is retro game reviews. Or retrospectives. Or something. I’ll figure out what to call them later.

But I don’t just want to write 500 words on why Chrono Trigger was awesome, because that’s been done to death. I’m thinking more along the lines of forgotten classics, or even games and systems that were just plain forgotten.

Plus, doing video capture on older systems is way easier (since they couldn’t output HD video in the first place), so hopefully I can do some more video stuff with them in addition to the text review (or retrospective, or whatever the hell it is).

But I have a problem: I’ve got too many old games to choose from. Admittedly, it’s a pretty good problem to have, but that said, I’m still having trouble deciding where to start.

I won’t list specific games I’m thinking of doing (at least for now), but rather systems I’ve got available. Here we go:

  • NES
  • SNES
  • Master System
  • Genesis
  • Sega CD (maybe, it was a little picky the last time I played it)
  • 32X
  • Jaguar
  • 3DO
  • Turbo Grafx 16

Now, I could also do Saturn or other 32/64-bit era stuff, but I’d prefer to keep things older. And if you pick the NES, SNES, or Genesis, I’ll do my best to play lesser known stuff.

I’ll probably end up doing at least a few games on each of these eventually, but I’m just curious where you’d like me to start. So, which system(s) would you like to see highlighted first?

Thanks in advance for your responses, and to tide you over until the next real post, here is a video of professional wrestlers beating up inanimate objects.

3DO, Turbo grafix and Saturn!

I’d love to see some stuff on lesser-known NES and SNES games.

This sounds like a great idea!

Come on! Hamsters are not inanimate objects!

RIP Hamster :*(

Ok, so far was have a vote each for five different systems.

If anyone else wants to chime in it will pretty clearly affect the outcome.

Every vote counts!

Hans Wuerflein Says:

If no one else chimes in I’ll just put those five systems in a hat and draw one, so if anyone wants to plead their case, you’ve got until the weekend to do so.

It could be good. Good that you’re looking at off the beaten path titles, as not many need to be told how awesome Super Metroid or Mario 3 are. Don’t be affraid to mix stinkers in there too. I could only watch Criterion collection films, but where would be the fun in that?
