GOG Adds Ultima: Worlds Games for Free, Starts Vote Driven Sale Series
GOG.com has always done a good job of giving away games on special occasions, and even adding a few permanent freebees to their library.
Well, today they continue that tradition by adding both Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire and Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams to their collection of free games.
First up, Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire transports the Avatar to the primitive world of Eodon. Trek through the jungle fighting dinosaurs and working to help the tribes of this world in their fight against the Mymidex, a race of giant ants.
Next is Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams. This time around the Avatar is shot forward into the year 1893. A scientist at the World’s Colombian Exposition in Chicago is preparing a giant cannon to shoot a bullet-ship to Mars. Venture forth on the martian surface, meeting and working with historical figures like George Washington Carver, Marie Curie, Thomas Edison, Sigmund Freud, William Randolph Hearst, Vladimir Lenin, Grigori Rasputin, Theodore Roosevelt, Nikola Tesla, Mark Twain, and H.G. Wells, just to name a few.
Why is this game not more popular?
Anyway, awesome concepts and odd naming system aside, these are two great, old RPGs. The run in a modified version of the Ultima VI engine, so if you’ve played through the rest of the series already, these will feel right at home.
GOG is also starting their Battle of the Games promotion. Each day for the next 17 days two games will square off in a fan vote. The winner after 24 hours of voting will be discounted 60 percent for the following 24 hours, while the loser (politely called the runner-up) still gets a 40 percent discount. Everyone (but the second place game, I guess) wins.
The first two games facing off are Myst: Masterpiece Edition and The 7th Guest. I don’t own The 7th Guest yet, so for the next 24 hours I think it is, like, so much better than Myst.
Go vote for The 7th Guest. I want to save an extra $2.
