California Agrees to Pay ESA $950k for Brown v. EMA Court Costs

As if the state of California wasn’t broke enough already, now they must cough up $950,000 USD in legal fees to the ESA after losing the Brown v. EMA Supreme Court case.

But hold on, now. The ESA aren’t monsters. Mike Gallagher, president and CEO of the ESA, made a statement about the owed funds, saying, “Senator Yee and Governor Schwarzenegger wasted more than $1 million [of] taxpayer funds [in total legal fees] at a time when Californians could ill afford it. However, we feel strongly that some of these funds should be used to improve services for California’s youth.”

So, what is the ESA going to do with the money? Apparently, they plan to use some of it to “develop after-school educational programs for underserved communities in Oakland and Sacramento.”

Awww, how sweet; they’re like a modern-day Robin Hood, saving the poor from their questionably competent (and also poor) government. I just hope that California has learned a valuable lesson about fighting the videogame industry.

I wonder if this will make people forget about the ESA’s SOPA support….

Nah, probably not.

Am I right in saying that if the EMA lost then violent games would be regulated like pornography and forced off the shelves of major retailers?

It just seems that the powers that be aren’t getting enough feedback from gamers to enact laws that go over smoothly.

I think that’s right.

It’s sort of a bad deal for Californians all around. No matter who won, the citizens were always going to lose :/

I think getting feedback and caring about doing the right thing are very different things. Oh and to answer your question, Yes.
