Blizzcon 2012 Canceled

Blizzard announced today that they are canceling Blizzcon, their huge annual promotional event for fans and press alike, for 2012.

The reason given for the cancelation is that they are “heavily focused on getting Diablo III, [World of Warcraft] Mists of Pandaria, and [Starcraft II] Heart of the Swarm into players’ hands as soon as possible.”

There has been some speculation that that isn’t the only reason, though. ars technica cites declining attendence numbers from 2010, which was attended by 27,000, to 2011, which had 26,000 attendees.

Blizzard has announced, however, that they will be holding the 2012 Battle.net World Championship, featuring the StarCraft II and World of Warcraft Arena World Championship tournaments, somewhere in Asia towards the end of this year. Perhaps this means that Blizzard is taking their focus away from their more casual fans and placing it on the hardcore competitors and eSports fans instead.

Needless to say, many Blizzard fans will be disappointed by this news. I mean, the world is ending this year and there’s no Blizzcon for fans to attend?

Way to kick ‘em while they’re down, Blizzard. I hope you’re proud of yourselves.

Faye Lanks Says:

So I gues no £500 premium grognard mounts this year?

Meagan Bickell Says:

I really wanted one of those, too.

Faye Lanks Says:

Do you play WOW? I’m part of the minority it seems, but I just can’t get into Blizzard games at all. I guess I’m just weird.

Meagan Bickell Says:

I used to, but not anymore. Mostly because my friends stopped playing and it wasn’t much fun for me without them. I never actually paid money for any in-game stuff, though. Do you play any other MMOs?

Faye Lanks Says:

Yeah, tried Maple Story and Rift. It turns out the MMO thing is part of a larger problem, but I don’t much like Starcraft, old Warcraft or Diablo either.
All the stuff about real life money transactions also puts me off any kind of thoughts of MAYBE getting Diablo 3. It kinda makes me nausious to think they would intentionally incentivise the monitisation of digital items simply so they can peel a layer off the top.

Adushan Says:

I’m gonna say something really sad, I play WOW but not socially. No one I know has it so I just try to get my solitary mage up to level 80. One day it’ll happen…

Anyway I think this news indicates Diablo 3 isn’t coming out till the end of Feb at the earliest.
