Music Monday: Wicked Dune Buggy

Depending on which version you play, Sunsoft’s NES classic Blaster Master (or its superior original title, Super Planetary War Records: Metafight) is either a game focusing on Kane, a soldier piloting a war tank (“Metal Attacker”) leading a counter revolution to take control of the planet Sophia The 3rd, or focusing on a boy named Jason who gets sucked underground, stumbles on a tank (“SOPHIA THE THIRD”), and fights underground mutants in an attempt to rescue his pet frog, Fred. A bit of a difference between the Japanese and Western game stories, but either way: Young Kane/Jason has a wicked dune buggy that can hover, swim, shoot missiles and climb walls, so why he’s wasting his time trying to save a planet/his frog is anyone’s guess.
Critically, Blaster Master is unanimously considered to be one of the greatest games on the system. Sunsoft’s NES titles tend to be hit-or-miss (see also Fester’s Quest, Batman, and Journey to Silius), but one thing’s for sure: they sure can write some awesome chiptunes. Enjoy.
