Music Monday: Colossal Battle Themes
The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus HD Pack was released this past week, and I wasted no time in picking it up. I’ll take any excuse to replay Shadow of the Colossus again. I wasn’t as keen on Ico, but I’m willing to give it another chance with a HD makeover.
As far as I’m concerned, Shadow of the Colossus was the best game ever released for the PS2. The only thing that let it down was the PS2 hardware itself. The HD remake solved any graphical problems I ever had with it, and now I think it’s perfect. No other game I’ve played can consistently give me that awesome spine tingling feeling.
Playing it again has reminded me how much the soundtrack, composed by Kow Otani, adds to the already epic fights against the Colossi. There is very little music during the rest of the game. A few songs play during cut scenes, but there’s nothing while exploring the world. The absence of music elsewhere adds to the impact the battle songs have. The music in Shadow of the Colossus has helped to create some of my most memorable moments in gaming. There’s nothing better than climbing a giant Colossus, or hanging onto a massive flying beast with this soundtrack playing in the background.
There were plenty of great tracks to choose from, and I’ve picked three of my favourites. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
The Opened Way
Revived Power
In Awe of The Power

Fine choices, all. I’d rank them among my favourites for sure. Might I also suggest http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tvOsQPA5N4 for something on the quieter end of the spectrum.
