GOG.com has Ultima IV for Free

As part of a second wave of Electronic Arts classics showing up on Good Old Games, the service has put up all time classic RPG Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar free of charge.

Originally released in 1985 (yes, the series was already up to number 4 before the NES was released in the US) the game was heralded for, among other things, being three times the size of its predecessor and expanding on the RPG genre of the time to the extent that it served as the blueprint for developers well into the 1990′s.

The GOG release also includes the game’s manual, spellbook, cluebook and map.

Gamers wanting to go even further back in the genre’s infancy can pick up Ultima 1-3 for $5.99, also recently released.

GOG has also released, as part of the aforementioned wave of EA classics, Dungeon Keeper 2, the first two Wing Commander games and Populous.

EA may be losing a few fans in its dick waving contest with Steam, but releasing classics, sans DRM could draw a few of them back.
