Don’t By The New Driver Game on PC, It Requires An Always On Internet Connection

In a tweet sent out by the official Driver twitter account, it’s been revealed that Driver: San Francisco will come with Ubisoft’s own DRM which requires an internet connection at all time. This is the same DRM we saw with Splinter Cell: Conviction and Assassin’s Creed 2, though in both of those cases the DRM was eventually patched out.

This DRM has been effective, taking several months to be cracked in the case of Assasin’s Creed 2, and is all done in the name of “protecting” Ubisoft’s PC games.

Ubisoft have also admitted that to play online you have no option but to sign up to an Online Uplay Passport, regardless of which platform you bought the game for. The online pass means that only one person can ever take the game online without shelling out more money ($9.99).

It’ a sticky topic, because who am I to tell a large company what they should or shouldn’t do to protect their babies. But on the other hand, as a blogger I have some complex self-entitlement issues, and as a sensible human being I fell pretty safe in my assumption that the people who think this level of DRM is fine are a bit greedy.

If everyone’s connections are perfect, the game is reasonably priced, well supported and eventually the leash is taken off; and as long as the profits saved from the evil grip of piracy are pumped back into innovative new games; and as long as the privacy and data-tracking done on the unavoidable Uplay Passport are sensible and reasonable; and as long as those retailers who live pretty much only on second-hand games don’t over-charge consumers… then I guess it’s fine.

Adushan Govender Says:

Not to poke holes in the piracy statement, but Assassin’s creed 2 was pirated pretty quickly. I don’t know timelines, but as far as I know the longest time a game took to be pirated was Prince of Persia Warrior Within which took 2 whole weeks to crack.

If they can make an offline world of warcraft, they can pirate anything.

No need for all that other stuff. :D
