The Nukezilla Sunday Supplment – July 3rd 2011
Every Sunday we’re going to post links to articles we think are interesting from the last week. Sundays are usually very quiet around here, so this seems like the best day to do it. We’re going to link to articles on range of subjects, including videogames, technology, movies, geek culture and much, much more.
Videogames
The Politics of Creative Ownership: EVE Online’s Council of Stellar Management – Gamasutra. ”The Council of Stellar Management is a group put together by EVE Online‘s developers to help make decisions for the game, and in this feature, we speak to CSM members and EVE developers to find out more about what purpose the group serves in the game.”
Activision benefits from Supreme Court decision, didn’t help pay for it Ars Technica. As the California videogame law was struck down by the US supreme court this week, Ars Technica arg4es that Activision gained dramatically from the ruling, but didn’t actually contribute to it.
Science
Shyness: Evolutionary Tactic? – The New York Times. Being shy is often seen viewed as a negative thing in our society, with reclusiveness seen as anti-social or weird. However, this article argues that being shy is actually an important evolutionary defence.
History & Politics
North Korean defector learns to live outside the world’s biggest prison – The Guardian. This is a short but interesting article on what it’s like for North Korean defectors, constantly used to living in fear of hunger and oppresion, who escape to South Korea where prosperity is almost as threatening to them. Very eye-opening.
Movies & TV
The two articles below focus on the Harry Potter stars, now ending their lives at Hogwarts.
Life After Harry Potter – The Guardian. “James and Oliver Phelps play the Weasley twins, Fred and George, in the Harry Potter films. Emine Saner meets them”
Rupert Grint on the end of Ron Weasley: ‘It’s like grieving’ – interview – The Guardian. ”For more than half Rupert Grint’s 23 years, he has had another existence as Ron Weasley, Harry Potter’s comedy sidekick. As the final film in the series is released, where to now for the number-two boy wizard?”
