The Nukezilla Sunday Supplement – 26th June 2011
Every Sunday we’re going to post links to articles we think are interesting from the last week. Sundays are usually very quiet around here, so this seems like the best day to do it. We’re going to link to articles on range of subjects, including videogames, technology, movies, geek culture and much, much more.
Videogames
Blowing Bubbles – GamesIndustry.biz. “Mobile and social gaming are in a huge valuation bubble – but that doesn’t have to mean that disaster is coming.” Another good article from Rob Fahey.
20 years of sim games – Ars Technica. A monster feature on the history of simulation games. There’s two parts out so far and it’s rather good from what I’ve read up to. You can check out part two here.
Culture
Feminism in the 21st century – The Guardian. “Caitlin Moran writes about her body, Rachel Cusk dissects the aftermath of her divorce and Sylvia Walby addresses ‘raunch culture’. What do their books reveal about feminism today?”
How to survive the age of distraction – The Independent. Do you find yourself getting distracted more easily? Have you found that read with a laptop on is like reading at a busy party? That’s what this article focuses on. The article seems to have gone, but the cached version is still there (scroll down a bit).
Science
Researchers explore problems of ‘face blindness’ – The Guardian. Prosopagnosia, or face blindness is a peculiar disorder where a person simply cannot recognise or remember faces, even of people that they know well. The research has been limited so far, but more attention is being placed on face blindness, which affects a surprising number of people.
The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon – Damn Interesting. ”In fact, you probably learned about it for the first time very recently. If not, then you just might hear about it again very soon. Baader-Meinhof is the phenomenon where one happens upon some obscure piece of information– often an unfamiliar word or name– and soon afterwards encounters the same subject again, often repeatedly.”

I still suspect I might have some form or face-blindness, probably stemming from my eyesight not being the best ti could be for years. Having glasses and seeing faces makes it easier, but not what I see other people being able to do.
Useless fact: I have mild face blindness.
Who are you?
namebadges are mandatory at ProsopagnosiaCon; swapping badges is frowned upon.
After the test, I am “recognition imparied” with a score of 40% on prosopagnosiaresearch.org. Outside two standard deviations from the average of 79% (12% is 1SD in this case)
Absolute madness! (is the diagnosis)
no google results for either dyslexiaresearch.org or dyslexairesearch.org
I got 35%…
I’m pretty sure I’m okay with faces. Creepy test though.
“I’m sorry, no i don’t have Prosopagnosia, I just don’t care who you are, because i’m winning”
