E3: Dust 514 Not Coming to 360 – Xbox Live Too ‘Closed’
Dust 514 is one of the titles this year’s E3 has got me rather excited about, in a quiet way. Like many, I’m fascinated by the world CCP have created in Eve Online but haven’t the time or patience to fully embrace it. Having an online shooter which interacts with the MMO might be just the thing to give me a taste of the bigger picture without it taking over my entire life.
If I choose to jump in, however, it looks like it’s going to have to be on the PS3. Speaking at an E3 presentation, CCP’s CTO Halldor Fannar had this to say about the prospect of a Xbox 360 version:
The main reason why we couldn’t go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system; [...] when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice. Microsoft has a different point of view: they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live. [...] We couldn’t come to an agreement on Xbox Live.
While there are undoubtedly advantages to Microsoft keeping tight control of their services, I’m starting to think that they lose too much in being unwilling to compromise. Meanwhile, in an CCP interview over at Rock Paper Shotgun, the developer was disappointingly cagey about why there were no plans for a PC version. It’d seem like a no-brainer, given the game’s provenance.

It’s been confirmed to be a PS3 exclusive hasn’t it?
@Ben Stead: Yes, it’s PS3 exclusive, and this is one reason why, it seems.
They wouldn’t put it on PC because all of the Eve players would just dualbox an Eve account and a Dust514 account. Also: mouse/keyboard vs controller = mouse/keyboard wins.
