Call of Duty Getting A Subscription Service
This fall Activision will be launching Call of Duty Elite to go with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The subscription service will provide players with DLC as well as stat-tracking tools apparently modelled on stock-trading websites. There’s also going to be a Facebook-like social network to meet other gamers. Players who don’t sign up will still be able to play the game online.
No price has been given, but apparently Activision executives are expecting it to cost less than services like Netflix (which currently charges $7.99 per month).
Last September Activision’s COO, Thomas Tippl, hinted there may be a subscription service on the horizon. He also said that Activision aren’t going to “take anything away from players that they used to get today for the price they get it for today.”

As if anyone is enough of an idiot to actually believe that bullshit.
Oh wait, people already buy the CoD DLC.
This will be extremely successful because of idiots who throw their money at anything with the CoD brand, and then the rest of the industry will follow suit. Yet another step towards “buy the game to get the right to pay for the full game”.
I hate to say it, but fair enough. It’s not something I’ll be paying for but so long as they stick to what they say and don’t take anything away from non-paying players (which I find somewhat hard to believe, but you never know) then I don’t see a problem with this. Though I do think that anyone who pays a monthly fee for stat tracking and a CoD-specific Facebook is an idiot.
I can’t imagine anything they could offer that would be worth a monthly fee. Yet millions of fools will line up for this, and I bet they will still have to pay something, probably around half, for those $15 map packs.
Honestly. If someone buys into this, they need a swift kick in the ass.
Going to wait and see what we have to end up paying for and how much it will cost. The most important thing I need to know is if Modern Warfare 3 will even be a good game, it’s going to be hard to top Black Ops multiplayer.
I’m not going to pay for this crap, but I won’t judge anyone who finds it worthwhile. I’ve even bought map packs for most of the CoD games, that I rarely play. I’m just not their target demo.
