Ichi The Killer Director Rumored To Be Working on Ace Attorney Movie

A couple pieces of information have come to light over the past few days that hint that a Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney movie is in the works. The first bit, which many find to be crazy, comes directly from the mouth of director Takashi Miike. Yeah, the dude that made Ichi The Killer (link very NSFW).

The Huffington Post got an interview with Miike at the Cannes Film Festival, where he was talking about his newest film Hara-Kiri: Death of A Samurai. Towards the end of the interview, Miike was asked about he is currently working on. He responded, “It is a very light comedy that I am filming now, a court drama, based on a video game, the Nintendo game DS.” While his wording is confusing at the end of the quote, this points to a possible Ace Attorney movie being helmed by Miike.

This sounds strange if you’ve seen Ichi and Audition, Miike’s most well-known and violent films. How could a guy that makes such gruesome rape and torture-filled movies bring Phoenix Wright to the big screen? Well, the director is also known for making family-friendly fare, such as Zebraman, The Great Yokai War, and Yatterman. So it’s not out of the realm of posibility for him to make a videogame adaptation that doesn’t involve showing copious ammounts of blood.

The other bit of info lies in the header image which comes from a set in Kyoto, where Miike is rumored to be filming his next movie. Notice anything familiar about them? The header in particular shows off a store front from from Gourd Lake (a setting in Ace Attorney‘s fourth case) and a picture of Steel Samurai (a TV super hero popular in Ace Attorney).

As a fan of Miike’s gory and not-so-gory work and a lover of all things Phoenix Wright, I’m genuinely excited about seeing if this movie will come to be. If it does, I can safely assume that it’ll be one of the best game adaptations ever made.
