New Tri-Ace Lighting Demo is Well-lit

Japanese developer Tri-Ace has created a Star Ocean-themed demo video to show off their latest lighting, shadowing and shading techniques.

The whole thing can be rendered at 30 fps on an Xbox 360 or PS3. Perhaps the nicest part is judicious use of HDR to create impressive sun glow and reflective glare. Even after all these years, it’s a relief to see HDR used in a way that isn’t simply blinding for blinding’s sake.

Ordinarily, I would file this sort of thing under “marketing ploys” and I’d advise you to do the same. The technology is likely 100% legit since they show their work for the hardcore geeks to check, but we aren’t likely to see this much detail in a full-length Tri-Ace RPG anytime soon.

Still, I can’t resist showing this off simply because I’m a big Tri-Ace fan. Also, isn’t it amazing how incredibly bad their logos are despite all this technical progress? Going to their site for more information feels like visiting a really SERIOUS BIZNESS science lab.
