Sources Claim Nintendo Planning E3 Reveal For Wii Successor

Several third-party sources have told Game Informer that Nintendo plans to unveil its next home console, the successor to the Wii, either this upcoming E3 or perhaps even before.
The only details given are that the still as yet un-named system is set for a Fall of 2012 launch and that it’s capable of displaying HD graphics (with Kotaku adding that the console is capable of higher resolutions than the Xbox 360 and PS3).
Sales of the Wii have been declining steadily for a couple of years and a price drop is already expected to hit in May, so the notion that Nintendo might be ready to talk about the system’s heir isn’t too far-fetched.
This year’s E3 is set to take place June 7-9 in Los Angeles. Nintendo’s latest hardware, the Nintendo 3DS, recently launched on March 25 in EU and March 27 in the US.

I hope it’s called WiiII.
Next nintendo had better be more mainstream than the wii, have the quality of the SNES and be not shit like an N64. Next nintendo product to be hd is confirmed by the nqture of home technology now, nobody will be impressed i they Plug another thing into SCART sockets.
I just want a new metroidvania styled game, 2-d openworld labyrinth RPG.
I’ll love it if it were called the Super Happy Joy Joy Fun System 2000 Plus OK!!!
@Faye Lanks: Shadow Complex?
The time is about right. They are about to release a second Wii Zelda, and that’s been pretty much their systems’ swan song the last 2 generations running, if you remember Twilight Princess was originally made for the game cube, and even saw a cube release post Wii launch.
I just hope Skyward Sword is as good of a send off for the Wii as Majora’s Mask was for the N64.
@ben already 100% it, had that done within 24 hourw of launch, completed it 5 times week one. I consume the fuck out of that type of game. I loved it though, no regrets about tertiarily funding homophobes.
@adushan my favourite title for any game ever is still Super Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting: Turbo Edition: For Matching Service.
For matching service!!!!! what a great way to announce online capabilities! Engrish is cute and adorable, I love it~<3
@Faye Lanks: Oh yeah I forgot about the author being a bit of a weirdo.
@Ron Wheres the story here? Or is this a discussion piece? I just realised that this news is “rumour: no details but a dude told some other dude it might happen; tangential fact.” Which has its place but…
No offense meant but this not news on closer inspection and is either wrongly tagged or NZ needs a wider berth of tags for articles. Theres certainly a place for this, however, maybe even as a forum discussion if not an article.
@ben the guy is a wank and I dislike his views and subsequently him, but the game was a good game. I would probably have played and enjoyed it even sans story. Now that I think about it all I remember is Nathan Drake, a super-suit and a flying island or something as far as story hooks?
@Faye Lanks: Never played it, I’m the opposite of you. Don’t enjoy those sort of games. I remember the super-suit shit but that’s about it.
@Ben Stead: metroidvanias are my diablo or warcraft. Too bad itd be too hard to randomly generate them or Id be in the money.
@Faye Lanks: Just hire an entire apartment block, hide keys in different rooms, build some tunnels, fill it with weapons, write a pretty shoddy and throwaway story and bingo, you have your own metroidvania.
@Ben Stead: pricey! I want someone to make one and just not bother making a story for it. Which a tad more realistic. Double space on an iphone is a full stop, hence commas and such becoming them. Typing and lying in bed is hard…
@Faye Lanks: Did you play Aquaria? Like Ben, I don’t instinctively like Metroidvanias, but I really liked Aquaria. It’s gorgeous, has a fantastic soundtrack (which I am now looking up because nostalgia) and actually has a worthwhile story.
There’s also a bunch of mods for it that add new levels, you basically have unlimited content.
I need my eyes checked. Every time I read Supersuit I read it as Superslut.
But ok hands up, balls on the table, who would buy a new Nintendo Console assuming it’s backwards compatible, has one controller, no Blu-Ray, no free online, and costs about $599?
I’d say those stats are conservative but fair.
@Adushan Govender: They aren’t fair at all. Why would Nintendo ruin a good thing? They tried a dedicated and powerful gaming system already and failed, the Gamecube.
Whatever the successor is it will cost less than $350 and yes be more powerful than the current consoles but won’t be as powerful as what Microsoft and Sony do next.
It’s rumoured to have better-than-PS3 video resolution, and I’d assume it would need a more powerful processor than the PS3 to run that AND the Next Generation Waggle.
And factor in the next gen disc/cartridge/memory stick needed and I’d say it would be no less than $550.
@Adushan Govender: So you’re saying they are going to launch at near enough the PS3 price? Really? You think any company would do that? The wii is a very special exception, but the majority of consoles are sold at a loss.
