This week’s wallpaper comes to you courtesy of Amazon.com, who delivered my shiny new Nintendo 3DS a day early!
Brett and I checked the 3DS out at E3 last year, and my initial impressions stand.
The 3D is a little gimmicky, but it’s an impressive gimmick. The way it ties into the system menus is pretty slick, and Pilotwings Resort really benefits from it. The hardware still doesn’t look very good to me — it seems half-finished, and I’m still not happy about the mega-gloss case. This thing picks up dust and fingerprints at a terrifying rate.
That said, it’s still a good evolution of the DS line. It’s got a lot of horsepower, and at least a couple of its launch titles are pretty solid. We’ll get reviews up for a few of them in the next couple weeks, so keep an eye out for those.

I got the aqua one. Don’t judge me.
It’s basically staying in the box until 1) I get some screen protectors, 2) I get a case to protect it from dirt and grubby hands, and 3) Something worth playing on it comes out.
So…June-ish.
Justin, this is absolutely sublime.
It now exists as my permanent wallpaper.
I defy anyone to put this as your wallpaper and say it’s not an improvement.
@Adushan Govender: Wow, that’s quite a compliment. Thanks.
I go the aqua one too. This makes me wish that a purple one had been an option though. How’d you light that?
@Ace Flibble: I held a MacBook Pro box angled above the 3DS, then hit that with my flash which was triggered remotely, so the reflection off the top of the 3DS was filled up by the purple screen on the box.
I gave in to temptation and ordered a black one today from Amazon. I’m with @Jenny Rouse: about it more or less staying in the box until June. Ocarina will be my first big game on it, I think.
@Justin Massongill: … That’s genius. Seriously. I was envisioning nasty antics with reflectors painted painted purple and all sorts.
