Capcom Announces Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

Capcom today announced a new entry into the Resident Evil series. A four player co-op team based shooter called Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. The title is being developed in collaboration with Slant Six Games, who have previously worked on a few SOCOM games for PS3 and PSP.

The game will be returning to 1998 and the Raccoon City incident of Resident Evil 2 and 3. You play the part of an Umbrella Security Services soldier attempting to cover up the T-virus outbreak. Along the way, players will revisit old locations, such as the Raccoon City Police Department, and encounter familiar faces like Leon Kennedy.

Add Operation Raccoon City to The Mercenaries 3D, Revelations and the recent reveal of Revival Selection, and I get the feeling Capcom wants us to be playing more Resident Evil. I know I’ll definitely be getting my hands on Revival Selection as soon as possible. I missed Code Veronica the first three times around, and I’ll take any opportunity to replay Resident Evil 4.

I’ll be keeping an eye on Operation Raccoon City. I have a soft spot for Resident Evil, and I like the idea of playing as an Umbrella employee to get some more information on their side to the story.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is expected to be released in Winter 2011 on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

What, did somebody send Capcom a copy of L4D a couple months back? Because the gist of this 4 player co-op vs zombies/monsters sounds mighty familiar.

Ace Flibble Says:

The update to Code: Veronica’s the only one that interests me. This new game, from the few details we know, seems to be an all-out action/shooter and the plot requires retconning a lot of the original three games (which in turn means key parts of the new games can’t have happened – they’re just screwing over their own plot).

Of course details are slim so it’s a little early to pass final judgement, but so far it’s looking like Capcom don’t really know what to do with the series anymore.

Jack Frost Says:

I dunno, being an umbrella agent might be cool, but RE5 was such a shitty game (IMO) they are really going to have to step it up this time…

Glassninja Says:

I like the concept behind this one. I’ve just got this nice image in my head of me and three friends working through the city blasting zombies and BOWs, and maybe the occasional human that Umbrella needed silenced. Crossing my fingers that HUNK will be somewhere in there; that guy’s a badass.

The story will undoubtedly be pretty terrible (and probably not even canon from the sound of it), but I enjoyed RE5 for its co-op blastin’ despite its narrative.

Faye Lanks Says:

I’d go to a Zombie-infested Racoon city with some mates. Sounds like a good oppurtunity to have some neat 4p puzzles or Open World that shit and let us explore in teams of two. I’ll be watching this one.

hehe… With all these new titles… We’ll be sure to be seeing S.T.A.R.S…
fine, don’t laugh.
