Sony and LG Patent Dispute Continues as PS3 Importation Ban Lifted

A decision in the Hague, regarding the dispute between Sony and LG over patent infringements, has lifted the ban on the importation on PS3s into Europe.
According to the Foss Patents blog, the ban was lifted due to the “history of negotiations” between the companies and back-and-forth nature of their dispute. PS3s are now being shipped into Europe.
Around 300,000 consoles were seized by customs officers in the Netherlands where PS3s are first delivered and then distributed to the rest of Europe. The estimated value of the seized consoles is around €43 million (around $60 million).
LG has been order to pay Sony €130,000 in legal fees and an additional €200,000 for every day the company doesn’t pay.
This latest order only relates to the preliminary injunction against Sony and not to the ongoing case. LG is seeking royalty payments for every Blu-ray device sold by Sony (at around $2.50-$2.55 per unit). With around 47 million PS3s sold and many other Sony Blu-ray devices, LG estimates that Sony owes around $180 million in patent fees.
The disputes stem from December last year when Sony took legal action to block the importation of LG mobile phones into the US. LG then filed a counter suit over the Blu-ray patent infringements.
