Double Fine Announces New Retail Game

It’s been a little while (I wonder why) since Double Fine Studios released an in-store retail game; in fact, their last title was 2009′s Brutal Legend. They have kept busy with two different (and short) downloadable titles: Costume Quest and Stacking. Many (including myself) wondered if Double Fine had moved into the downloadable market for good.

But a week ago, Double Fine announced their third Amnesia Fortnight game, based off of Sesame Street titled Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster, to be released exclusively on the Xbox 360.

Gamasutra conducted an interview with Tim Schafer and project lead Nathan Martz, and when questioned about the decision for Double Fine to merge its own ideas with a licensed property, Schafer responded:

As we talked about the game, it just came up with more and more people, “Have you thought about this as a Sesame Street game?” And it seemed like such a natural fit. You know, Double Fine doesn’t really “do” licensed properties. So we kind of laughed it off the first time. But the more we thought about it, the more it actually made sense, and seemed to kind of fit naturally.

Once Upon a Monster will release sometime this upcoming fall, and will feature Kinect support.
