Production Company Picks Up Devil May Cry Movie Rights
I’m currently working on my RTS Review for this Thursday (hint: its another of Uwe’s brilliant work), and I had a thought. Eventually, I’m going to get to a point where I’ve seen all that gaming cinema has to offer. Then I realized, no, I’ve still got years of video game adaptations left to sit through. Case in point, Screen Gems, the production company that helps keep the Resident Evil movies going, has just acquired the rights to Devil May Cry.
Screen Gems have had a partnership with Capcom to make the RE movies, and those have been somewhat of a success (to the tune of $580 million made worldwide). That success has brought the companies together again for a new movie. The writer assigned to DMC is a newbie, Kyle Ward, who’s upcoming Fiasco Heights is his first film script. It’s not known how closely Ward’s script will follow the actual game’s storyline, or if he’ll make a loosely-based script like the RE movies. Interestingly enough, Ward is also working on the inexplicable Kane and Lynch movie script.
This is an interesting team moving forward with this movie. Screen Gems’ RE movies have been pretty boring since the first, but it would be nice to see them branch out into other gaming properties. The inclusion if an untested script writer is strange, but the kid’s gotta have something going for him if he’s getting all these offers. Let’s just hope the guy doesn’t become the next Paul W. S. Anderson.
