Epic Pulls Out of Game Save Unlocks for Gears 3

After canceling their VGA reveal at the last minute this past December, Epic Games has now gone back on their promise of special unlockable content in Gears of War 3 for those with save data/achievements from past Epic Games titles: Gears of War, its sequel, Unreal Tournament III, Shadow Complex, and the soon to be released Bulletstorm.

Lead game play programmer, Joe Graf chalks the problem up to the fact that games from different publishers can’t connect to each other or share data. (This means the unlocks for the first two Gears of War games will still be featured, however).

Microsoft’s technology working the way it does is their fault, but Epic making promises they didn’t for sure know they could keep is theirs. Luckily, it’s all bonus content. In the end, nothing lost and nothing gained. Still, I hope Epic isn’t planning on making a habit out of this. Announcing content they hadn’t even verified they’d be able to release was just dumb.

But hey! I’m sure they’ll be happy to release all the missing unlocks as paid DLC later, so be excited about that!

Faye Lanks Says:

If I remember rightly, the unlocks in Gears 2 had alternative ways of getting them, so I wouldn’t worry too much about the content.

Naughton Says:

You’d think that MS would make an exception, seeing as how their high-profile exclusives are a bit of a rarity this year.
