PSP 2 Will Have Backwards Compatibility

At a recent round-table discussion Sony Computer Entertainment’s CEO, Kaz Hirai, revealed to impress.co.jp that the NGP, or as I will be calling it the PSP 2, will have software emulation enabling it to play PSP games. With no UMD drive the new device will only be able to play those PSP titles that are downloadable.

Happily, you’ll be able to re-download any titles you’ve already bought over the PSN (as long as you’re within your download limit). Sony are apparently in talks with publishers and software makers of currently non-downloadable titles, to get those games on the PSN too.

Another topic brought up during the interview was the PSP 2′s 3G. Not much is known yet (not even by Sony at this point, as they are still in talks with carriers), but there are plans for a 3G + wifi version, as well as a version with just wifi, much like Amazon’s Kindle.

It’s a nice feature I guess, provided you didn’t already buy a game on UMD.
