HMV to Close 60 Stores After Poor Christmas Sales
UK retailer HMV is to close around 60 of its stores after announcing a 13% drop in year-on-year stores sales.
Sales for the five weeks ending January 1st 2011 dipped 10% year-on-year, with HMV citing “challenging trading conditions”, including the recent spate of bad weather, as contributing factors.
The company’s shares have dropped 24% over the announcement.
Sixty stores represents 9% of its 700 outlets, which includes book chain Waterstones. HMV itself has 285 stores in the UK and Ireland.
The group has also said that it is struggling with various loans, hence the more drastic decision to close so many stores. The cost-cutting measures are expected to save around £10 million a year.
