ESRB Confirm ‘Rayman 3D’ Will Be a 3DS Title

The ESRB is a hotspot for breaking videogame news stories – only small ones mind, but stories nonetheless – and on January 1st, a day that will see most videogame sites post anticipatory lists, it’s nice to find a little non-list story worth writing about.

In December, the Australian Classification Board rated the upcoming Ubisoft title ‘Rayman 3D‘ a PG but didn’t disclose which console/s the next major title in a much beloved platforming series would appear on. I’m sure many were hoping Rayman 3D would be an upgrade/update of the original Rayman game released on the Playstation 3 via the Store. Some may have been wishing for a Rayman collection similar to the Sly Cooper, God of War, Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell collections.

Unfortunately neither of those possibilities are the case, but don’t be disappointed. The ESRB have confirmed that Rayman 3D will be a 3DS release (and will have an ‘Everyone’ rating), but as yet they haven’t released any details about the game’s content. Begin more speculation, as we still don’t know whether this will be a brand new Rayman game or a 3D version of the original game adapted for the new console.

I’m going to guess the latter, but the former would be wonderful. We are going to be getting an episodic Rayman prequel for the PSN and XBLA in the form of Rayman: Origins this year (which should be most awesome, I hope), but at the moment the intrigue of Rayman 3D holds more of my attention.

Somehow I completely missed out on the entire Rayman series. Anyone on NZ play them and have fond memories?

@Brett Parsons: I have to insist that you find a copy of Rayman 2 for any of the original platforms. If not, at the very least get the iPhone version.

Rayman was a huge part of my videogame childhood, as the original (and best) games were released around the time when I first started to play videogames a lot.

I remember the first Rayman game on the Gameboy being really good at the time…
