Nukestravaganza Last Call Phone-a-Palooza: 31 Reviews (iOS/Android)

[You've patiently read through 30 days of ever expanding game reviews from us during the month of December; an event we like to call NUKESTRAVAGANZA! Now, to close out the year of two thousand and ten we bring you a massive mobile mashup of mega proportions! Without further adieu, here's 31 mobile titles reviewed by five members of our lovely staff. Since we're all amazingly hip people, these games come from the smartphone platforms du jour: Android and iOS. Enjoy!]

By Jenny Rouse

Broken Sword: The Director’s Cut (iOS)

Mad clown bombers, international adventuring and a conspiracy involving the Knights Templar; what’s not to love?

Flight of the Amazon Queen (iOS)

A pastiche of Indiana Jones, pulp magazines and 1940s serials – the interface could have been better but the story is fun.

Beneath a Steel Sky: Remastered (iOS)

Comedy cyberpunk adventure in dystopian Australia, with a guy named after a can of beer.

I Love Katamari (iOS)

Stick with the console versions, the touch controls just don’t work here.

Doodle Jump (iOS)

…wait, WHAT time is it?!

By Justin Massongill

Infinity Blade (iOS)

Not only a well-crafted game, but an amazing display of the technology present in the latest round of iOS devices.

Bit.Trip Beat (iOS)

Lots of paddle-pushing fun for music-game (or Pong) aficionados.

Space Invaders: Infinity Gene (iOS)

A bit tough to control; entertaining but not the best game for touch screens.

Street Fighter 4 (iOS)

A mess; nearly unplayable on a touch screen — fighting games are meant for d-pads or joysticks.

Words With Friends (iOS)

Addictive for short bursts; hard to stay interested for long periods of time.

Doom 2 RPG (iOS)

In this sequel to the first turn-based mobile Doom the story and the writing fall flat, but beating palette swapped imps to death with a toliet makes up the difference.

Canabalt (iOS)

Jumping for your life across monochrome rooftops has never been this fun or trance inducing.

Super Mega Worm (iOS)

If you watched Tremors and were rooting for the worm, this is the game for you!

Cut The Rope (iOS)

Adorable green monsters must be fed candy, so please for the love of God: CUT THE ROPE!

Pix’n Love Rush (iOS)

Despite its gorgeous neo-retro style, Pix’n Love Rush is too hard to control on the touch screen to be fun and is easily left behind.

Rage HD (iOS)

Now the second best looking game on the iOS platform (see: Infinity Blade); id deliver a rail shooting tease for next year’s Rage.

Dead Rising: Mobile (iOS)

Horrible controls, draw distance and absurd game design choices make this a throwaway member of the Dead Rising family.

Worms 2 (iOS)

Along with a certain Mr. Paddon, I just can’t get enough Worms…too bad this mobile port crashes more than Lindsay Lohan on a Saturday night.

Mirror’s Edge (iOS)

Despite being a more gorgeous and complex version of Canabalt, Faith’s mobile outing might have been better off trying to ape what worked so well in other free running games of the moment rather than trying to fit the console experience into a 2D mobile platformer mold.

Air Control (Android)

Direct air traffic with this irritatingly addictive time consumer of a game that I adore.

Spaghetti Marshmallows (Android)

Build towers, test physics and get annoyed at marshmallow stealing frogs; could play it for hours.

Teeter (Android)

Standard balance board game that’ll keep you occupied for a few mintues, but little else.

Everlands (Android)

Fun puzzle-fighter with cute animals and clever hexagon-based gameplay, although takes some getting used to.

Game Dev Story (Android)

Run a game developer with this slightly odd but incredibly fun little game that gives you a glimpse of what Bobby Kotick’s life must be like.

By Jon Ruggiero

Fruit Ninja (Android)

Bring honor to your clan (and the adorable sensei) by chopping pineapples and mangos in half; also includes fancy blades to slice with and fun fruit facts.

Costal Tower Defense (Android)

Tower defense with lighthouses and ships, but on a hex board, so it’s even more tactical and nerdy.

Slice It! (Android)

Dissection without the horrifying high school biology aspects; cut a shape down to a predetermined size, making only a few cuts per shape.

Angry Birds Seasons (Android)

A Nativity Calendar with new levels, and a few Halloween-themed ones as well; same as before, only the pigs have more protection (via Santa hats and pumpkins), so that’s bullshit.

Alchemy (Android)

Drag icons into each other and see if it makes a new item, which can then be dragged into other items and make even newer stuff, with sometimes crazy results (mushroom + life = Mario 1up, time + dinosaur = fossil, glass + sand = hourglass, etc.).

Traffic Jam (Android)

A puzzle game where you move awkwardly placed sedans and semi trucks around a board to evacuate your fancy sports car from the other poor degenerates on the road.

PAC-MAN Championship Edition (Android)

The hip new Pac-Man game that everyone’s talking about (for good reason) but portable, making church a whole hell of a lot less boring.
