Canabalt Goes Open Source After Making 25k For Charity
Canabalt, the keep-on-running iPhone game, has been released as an open source title in celebration of the game making $25,000 for the gaming charity Child’s Play as part of the Indie iPhone Holiday Sale.
On the Semi Secret Software blog, developer Adam Saltsman explained the move, saying that it was “a thank you to everyone who supported the sale.”
While the game code is open source, Saltsman noted:
The Canabalt-specific game code, game art, animation, music and sound effects are all proprietary, and protected by our copyrights and trademarks. That is, you can copy-paste our engine code (any of the Flixel stuff, which is most of the good stuff anyways), and even sell it on the App Store, but you can’t distribute or redistribute our game code, art or sounds.
(Saltsman’s bold, not mine).
Which is fair enough.
