Wardrox’s Vlog 12th December: U Mad? Shadows and Bulletins

If you’ve not seen it yet, this is the post I’m talking about. Though as I say in the vlog, it’s not quite the desolate wasteland of dumb comments I expected.

DeadPan Says:

Beard!!! Moar beard!! Great video sir

Smab Says:

I’ve got a exam tomorrow for my What is Language? class so I’m trying to study.

The production value seems to be going up…

Sam Jordan Says:

I actually Googled the ‘link to the rest’ thing after I incoherently recalled it to John over Skype. The proper phrase is “Do what you do best and link to the rest”.

This post by (the very good, you should follow him on Twitter) Jeff Jarvis basically sums it up.

And today I am recovering from partying, reading lots of sexy articles and being cold.

Aim your LOIC at Nukezilla.com we are taking down this asshole a peg or two.

LONG LIVE ANONYMOUS!

@darkwhitehair: No need for LOIC. Just f5 a few times and the server will fall over.

Hans Wuerflein Says:

I’m studying for what will hopefully be my last final exam ever!

Unless I… I don’t know… get hit on the head by a coconut and decide I want to go back to school to be a veterinarian or something.

UglyDuck Says:

Bulletins are (kind of) what I want from wire; a list of articles summaries with a paragraph or two of information that I can browse through on the front page, so that I may get the news quickly and potentially discover new blogs or articles if they catch my eye.

Bulletins on NZ however, I don’t know. I get all my NZ stuff through the feed or through Wire, so I either don’t see it or it’s really just summing up what I already read on there. And since they’re not opinion pieces, it feels like watering down. I think what I’ve always wanted from NZ was for the site’s personality to fire on all cylinders, like a smart Eegra. Not just the headlines again. If it brings in the plebs, lovely, but it’s not for me.

As far as the article goes, the large majority of comments were not good. ‘Good’ being whatever you meant with that. They were being stupid. The tone of your article invited it, but the responses were reductive and ignorant.

As it happens, I’m more on ‘their side’ than yours; it wasn’t really sexist. It was thick. It was condescending. But as one user pointed out, it’s a male centric hobby (unfortunately) and it’s a bit of fun to show people tits – there’s nothing inherently sexist about that. The problem is that websites about crustaceans don’t bring in users and hits by posting pictures of naked ladies with hermit crabs covering their naughties. Nor do steam train websites have page 3 models draped across the engines or perched on the smokestacks.

@UglyDuck: one of the parts I cut out the video was me going into a bit more detail about the way Bulletins bridge Wire and NZ.

Eventually, the plan is to have Wire show the NZ bulletins somehow. So when you visit Wire.vg you can see the “editor’s choice” news, i.e. the news seen as important.

On NZ the same content acts as a way to provide more, and in turn increase traffic (which we need to do if we want to reach our ultimate goal of doing this full time).

When the posts appear on NZ, there’s going to also be a Wire.vg voting button, which is for the source, not the NZ Bulletin.

It’s because NZ’s purity/lack of fluff is what attracts a lot of people here that I chose to make them not appear in the RSS feed.

Glassninja Says:

Just out of curiosity, why is the word count of articles on the front page now?

I’m finally done for the semester, so I’ve moved back home and gotten into the Christmas spirit. Maybe some Starcraft (1) with some friends later, or a bit of Reach.

darkwhitehair Says:

@Glassninja: Word counts are used on Kindle articles and I really quite like it as a feature.

I’m making the front page more of a good starting point to explore the site, and I figured other’s may like it :)

UglyDuck Says:

@John Kershaw: It kind of clutters up the front page. I think it’s a nice feature in theory but I feel like the front page should be accessible – bold and to the point.

I would put forward the idea of an article summary that provides the user with information about each article on a separate page, such as word count, date, popularity, comments, links to, etc. Or a slidey thing like on wire.

FLanks Says:

@John Kershaw: Bulletins are kinda what I want from an internet site about games. Dtoid kinda used to be like that; a bit of news, a bit of editorial but it seems different now. I suppose that’s what happens wen you get big.

The way you’re spelling out content feeding content and the Wire.VG integration, it seems like it can work and a very fair way of doing things. It’ll be fun seeing where it all goes!
