Tim Schafer Wants to Make Psychonauts 2, Finding a Publisher? That’s Another Story
According to several sites, in the most recent issue of PlayStation Magazine 3 Tim Schafer has spoken about how he really wants to do another Psychonauts game. Unfortunately for fans of the original, Schafer is looking for a publisher that is interested in the project.
Admittedly, it’s a huge risk. The first game went through a couple of different publishers before finally ending up with Majesco. The game also didn’t sell incredibly well, and didn’t really shine until about two years later. Regardless of the poor initial sales — the ones that matter to larger publishers — Psychonauts did incredibly well critically, garnering 86-90% on Metacritic across all platforms.
So in a world where there’s a new brown/grey Game Of The Year-worthy FPS coming out every few months, I doubt we’ll be seeing a boxed Psychonauts 2 release any time soon — not to mention it isn’t even in development yet. Schafer is probably waiting to get a guarantee for the publisher so he doesn’t end up in the same fiasco he did with the first game, which is admirable. Nobody likes waiting around to play a game they’re eager for due to publisher bullshit.

I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I found Psychonauts to be a buggy overrated mess, and Brutal Legend was just a wretched piece of indulgent shit. Personally I don’t see why any publisher would give Tim Schafer the time of day.
+1 on Brutal Legend. Really did not get that. Wanky as hell.
@Phil Doherty: it was a bit janky, like most PS2 games were. I still really enjoy it, but I don’t tout it as “OMG BEST GAME EVAR”. It’s a PS2 gem, for sure, but it definitely deserved to get more praise/sales than it did.
Brutal legend is another story.
@Phil Doherty: Psychonauts’ Main selling point was it’s amazing story. It still has my personal award for best story and the dialogue and voice work is frankly without compare, but in all honesty the game play is on the border between meh and Kinda bad, esp the last level. From what I hear, Brutal Legend is much the same, if a little less well written.
That said, psychonauts 2 would be the reason I would buy a ps3
