Sony Claims PlayStation Phone Images Fake [Update]

Update: NowGamer have now changed their article, saying that the Sony PR person simply said that they don’t comment on speculation or rumour. On the writer’s Twitter he says: “I should point out that Sony has since asked us to remove that quote.”

Sony issued the same statement to Nukezilla, with its rep saying that they don’t comment on rumour or speculation.

Well, that was quick. Just hours after Engadget posted images of what it assured was the often rumoured PlayStation Phone, Sony has claimed that the images are faked.

Speaking to NowGamer, a Sony PR rep said these images are fake, while a Sony Ericcson PR rep told them that “Sony Ericsson does not comment on rumour or speculation.”

NowGamer says that there have been suspicions flying around the internet since the images were posted, especially related to “a large amount of dirt collecting around the screen, as well as mention of ‘A’ and ‘B’ buttons on the interface.”

Of course, don’t take Sony’s word for it any more than you would Engadget‘s. The gadget blog was pretty adamant mind: “It’s hard to believe that what we’re looking at is real — but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone.” Engadget are also pretty solid when it comes to stuff like this so I’d be surprised if they published something so bold without some very good sources.

Sony could be trying to keep its product, which obviously isn’t finished, out of the limelight and control the flow of information. Let’s not remember the Streisand effect: If Sony ask Engadget to pull it down, it’s a clear admission that it’s the real thing.

Let’s wait and see if Engadget respond, shall we?

NowGamer says Sony says… I remain of the opinion it’s fine. Though, when the phone comes out, we should link back to NowGamer.

NoZart Says:

Wow. Having vanilla Android on a Playstation device? Talk about culture clash….

Scott Hall Says:

I wonder what the price-tag for this monstrosity is going to be if it is real and if it ever gets released once proven real.
