Minecraft Site Hit by DDoS attack, Fans Angry at Lack of Updates May be to Blame

In a story that highlights the utter insanity of the internet, Minecraft developer Markus Persson has had his website, Minecraft.net, attacked with a denial of service attack.

A post on Wednesday by Persson, aka ‘notch’, said: “I’m not sure exactly what’s going on, but Minecraft.net appears to be suffering some kind of attack, and is down at the moment. I’m working on fixing it.” He then confirmed in a later post that it was an attack and described the DDoS: “Denial of Service means you occupy certain resources for a long period of time, making other people not able to use them. A real world example would be running up to the cashier at a supermarket and paying in small coins, counting every single one really slowly, then finding out at the end you didn’t have enough in the first place.”

It’s not clear for certain who initiated the attack, but a post on 4chan found by Kotaku seems to suggest it’s a group of irritated Minecraft fans who aren’t satisfied with the number of updates notch (essentially a one man team up until recently) is putting out. While not initiated by the usual 4chan members (and no way to verify who they are) the post reads:

Minecraft is currently experiencing a stimulation provided by us.

It’s purpose is to send Notch a clear message of how the future of Minecraft will turn out unless he gets to work, namely by influencing the amount of sales taking place, due to the attacks.

Start providing your customers with the updates that you promise them.

We have roughly 83,000 bots available, and preserved for this seizure, we could if we wanted to keep this going for weeks, however we have decided to give it a week, and see whether or not your attitude, and commitment will change, we believe it will when money stops rolling in for the time being…

anyhow, no we’re not from roblox, or any other Minecraft clone, not to mention none of us have been around 4chan for years, and nor has any real 4channers for that matter, its all newfags now, and has been for quite a few years.

Which, if true, is kind of insane. Minecraft fans wanting to play more Minecraft attack Minecraft servers which, in turn, makes development more difficult.

Whoever’s initiated the attack is obviously being a little silly, especially when this is just a small indie development team who has made an immensely popular game and is currently in a transitional phase as new staff are brought in.

Persson said: “As to why Minecraft.net is being targeted, I’m not sure,” and said that he’s now signed up for a DDoS protection service. ”While the guys hosting my server are looking into things, I’ll get back to coding,” he said. Minecraft.net is currently working fine.

Alas, the internet is dumb.

Poor show, expectant fans. Most uncool.

MrBRAD Says:

I recall Markus saying that he could just not release any more updates or even stop giving access to the game if he so wishes. I honestly wouldn’t blame him if he did.

Damn ingrates. He never needed to release the game before it was finished but he chose to anyway and now he gets treated like this. Who are they to tell him how to work?

Fucking newfags…
