Capcom Admits to Using New Dante to Stir Controversy
In an interview with IGN UK the Capcom US executive Christian Svensson has admitted that the firm used the redesign of Devil May Cry‘s Dante (created for the series Ninja Theor- developed reboot) to stir controversy among fans and therefore put DMC back in the conversation:
“To be fair, I think some of the strategy here was to create that discussion and dialogue, and I think it drastically raises the visibility of the title versus if we had just done another Dante.”
Hold on before you send that Capcom-Unity PM. The story doesn’t end there and it’s apparently not one Svensson authored to begin with. He continued:
“The original concepts that came back for Dante were actually extremely close to the Dante everyone knows and loves,” Svensson explained. “The feedback that came back from [Keiji] Inafune and [Hideaki] Itsuno was, ‘No guys, this needs to be completely different, we need you to go much further and be much more creative.’”
Of course Svensson also said the intent was never to annoy fans, but I suppose that ship has sailed, eh? Some fans will feel used and the fact that Svensson also confirmed that the developers won’t be further tweaking Dante’s design based on fan feedback will surely only be salt in the wound. They have my sympathies, but its not surprising really. Keiji Inafune is the same man who calls the Japanese games industry dead at the drop of a dime.

Because if Hollywood has taught us anything, it’s that studio heads who aren’t directly involved with the end product have much better ideas than the people actually making it.
Eh, it makes sense. If you’re going to revisit a tired series then you might as well go for a real revamp and get people talking. It’s a little bit of a dick move to just go straight for the controversy but it’s a forgivable and understandable dick move.
The big shame of it to me is that the majority of the complainers are still blaming Ninja Theory and there’s a large group of people who are boycotting Enslaved, as if not buying that will somehow make them go back to Dante’s old haircut (which seems to be all that this is about).
