Visceral Games Takes on Command & Conquer
Visceral Games General Manager (and head of action game development at EA) Nick Earl has told Gamasutra that the Dead Space developer is working on a new Command & Conquer title. Earl gave no concrete details other than that, but added that the game is “pretty far out”.
Spreading established franchises around different, often fledgling developers is certainly nothing new, but it’s interesting to see EA use the idea with one of their core franchises. They put DICE (Battlefield) to the task of developing Medal of Honor‘s multiplayer component and currently has the studio assisting Criterion (Burnout) with development of the next game in the Need For Speed series, Hot Pursuit.
It is of course way too early to tell how Visceral’s take on C&C will fare, but there’s a fair chance it won’t be held to the standards of past entries, especially as it will likely be an action-focused spin-off. Good luck with that; back when MoH developer Danger Close was still called EALA they attempted to make a first-person shooter set in the C&C universe called Tiberium. EA cancelled the game in January of 2008 over doubts in the game’s quality. Gulp.
