Original GoldenEye Designer Calls Remake a “Business Decision”
One of the original creators of the N64′s GoldenEye has called Activision out for their motives in remaking the 1997 classic. Speaking with Official Nintendo Magazine, Martin Hollis said that money was the more probable reason for the mega publisher releasing the title, which is being pretty drastically changed to be more modern.
“I imagine it is a business decision isn’t it? This name is valuable, let’s use it,” said Hollis. He suggest that passion for the game wasn’t the reason Activision was releasing it. “I find it hard to picture Activision’s top management being excited about the original and wanting to do it justice,” he said. “I find it hard to imagine [Activision executives] being excited about any game.”
He also compared Activision to EA, saying that “it’s my perception that they are trying to be EA, only more so” and that “they are doing a fine job at that”.
He did mention that he was impressed by the new GoldenEye developer Eurocom, saying: ”I know and like Eurocom. I think they are a good company. I’m confident they have done their very best.”
It’s nice seeing a man so close to original game speaking out over the remake. I’ve written recently on the issue and was hoping that if Activision were going to re-do the game, they’d just do a Perfect Dark XBLA style update; just adding a little bit of polish. Oh, and not releases it exclusively on a console where shooters don’t fare too well.

EA misjudges the audience for NBA JAM, Activision misjudges the audience for Goldeneye. Maybe Activision is following EA’s footsteps a little too closely.
Although, it doesn’t do Activision or EA any good to put them out for HD consoles… yet. Goldeneye would be competing with Black Ops, and NBA JAM would be competing with Elite 11. I’m betting on a Spring/early Summer 2011 release of Goldeneye and NBA JAM, hopefully on XBLA/PSN.
