New Xbox 360 Controllers With Revamped D-Pad Coming Soon, But Not With Systems
Microsoft’s Major Nelson has confirmed recent rumors that the Xbox 360′s D-Pad will be receiving a much (much, much) requested redesign this November.
In addition to the new D-Pad design, the touched-up controllers’ triggers will sport a more concave shape that will probably make them feel better maybe. The four face buttons are different shades of gray as well, instead of the vivid primaries (and green) of the existing units.
This is good news to many gamers who have been dealing with the 360′s (frankly terrible) D-Pad design for years. There are a few cross-platform games I’ve purchased on the PlayStation 3 just because that controller’s D-Pad isn’t absolute torture to try and use.
Unfortunately, there’s no mention in the announcement that the new controller will be included in any system bundles. I emailed Major Nelson for some clarification on this, and he confirmed my fears: the new controller will only be available as part of a $64.99 Play & Charge Kit at launch, and the Halo bundle’s controllers will be the old, disgusting, completely-unusable worst controllers ever. I am now strongly reconsidering what was recently a sure purchase of that amazing-looking Halo: Reach special edition Xbox 360 bundle. Why would I buy this bundle when I know that in two months those fancy controllers will be obsolete?
Maybe I’ll just hang the Halo controllers on the wall or something.

I just modded my controller. Shave off the ring of plastic under the d-pad and it works much better then before.
Oh good, a glossy finish and no colours! These are two very well thought out ideas.
damn they finally got a nice looking pad with the slim and then they bring out that fugly thing. silver plastics on electronics look so fucking tacky, like a late 90′s vhs. matte/gloss black and chrome is stylish, understated and goes with everything. it looks so much better than the old white, rapidly heading for dirt streaked gray or sun damage yellow, of old.
what the fuck is up with making the dpad slippery chrome and the buttons gray? function over form you twats.
