Kill Screen: A Handful of Quality Games Writers, Not F**kwits
Announced months ago, Kill Screen‘s first issue is now making its way into subscribers hands. Ars Technica posted a short review on the content of the premier issue and they appear to be very impressed. I admit, my first reaction to the title and objective of the $20 magazine ($75 for a 4-issue subscription and T-shirt!) seemed to be ripe with pretentious potential. I’m glad to have been proven otherwise.
They’ve taken the approach of writing personal stories about topics ranging from the appropriateness of violence and war as depicted in games to anxiety and Everquest. Game magazines have seemed near extinction in the US over the past few years, but publications like EDGE in the UK offer a high price tag for what most consider to be a worthy product.
If Kill Screen can maintain a unique voice, offering content that’s separate from most of what is available online it would be nice to see them grow a healthy following of subscribers. I know I don’t have the cash for a subscription at the moment, but times change. I just need to curb my DLC addiction and refrain from all of those pricey CE versions of annual releases; I’m looking at you Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood!
