GameStop Acquires Casual Game Site Kongregate

US videogame store GameStop has purchased Flash game aggregator Kongregate. The site houses Flash and Shockwave games where indie developers can add their games and make money from adverts and other promotions. It’s not yet known how much GameStop paid for the site, with GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines saying that the website helps them advance their “digital strategy by providing a gaming platform for casual, mobile and browser games.”

Kongregate offers free versions of the game to players, who must watch an ad before they can play the game. By default, the developer will always receive 25% of ad revenue, but can increase the amount by offering game exclusivity, taking part in sponsorships and joining the Statistic and Challenges API — an achievement-like system. This means developers who take part in all of the schemes offered could net up to 50% of game revenue.

In a video on the site, Kongregate co-founder Jim Greer said that GameStop “gets what we’re doing” and that they “want to help us make it bigger and throw their resources behind it.” They’re keeping their offices in California and Greer will be reporting straight to the president of GameStop. He also mentions tying in real-world rewards for playing the games on Kongregate.
