Free Book Alert! Jim Rossignol’s This Gaming Life Goes Public
This Gaming Life: Travels in Three Cities, a book written by Rock, Paper, Shotgun‘s Jim Rossignol has been released under a Creative Commons licence, meaning you can now get it for free.
As it’s free, I’m not sure how much more incentive I need to give you to read this fantastic book. So, I’ll just quote one of my gaming-industry-heros, Raph Koster (who wrote A Theory of Fun for Game Design, a book that changed my perception of gaming). “This Gaming Life is a fascinating and eye-opening look into the real human impact of gaming culture. Traveling the globe and drawing anecdotes from many walks of life, Rossignol takes us beyond the media hype and into the lives of real people whose lives have been changed by gaming. The results may surprise you.”
The one downer is that the book isn’t available in any kind of handy format, as far as I can tell. Then again, it’s free, and you could always just buy the physical book.

Theory of fun for game design, wasn’t too inspiring or anything for me. It was just, a book, on game design. What about it did you find so appealing?
@Generic Purple Turtle: just some of the basic stuff of what makes a game. I read it when I had very little exposure to that sort of stuff.
@John Kershaw: Well me too, but at the same time, it wasn’t anything too mind blowing. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it wasn’t too “ZOMGWTFBBQ games developerz are geniuses” kinda thing, if you know what I mean.
@Generic Purple Turtle: Oh I agree, but it still very much changed how I see games.
