Jumpgate Evolution Developers Discuss Reasoning for Their Recent Silence

You may remember a little game that we talked about at PAX ’09 called Jumpgate Evolution. It’s basically dropped off the map for a couple of years, but it probably would’ve caused the site to grind to a complete halt. With all of that in mind, It’s been a good year or so since we’ve last heard anything about Jumpgate. With good reason, though, says Executive Producer Lance Robertson in a recent post on the Official Jumpgate Evolution forums
“While the core game experience of intense space-based combat was still solid, the reality was that as the team scaled up to let in more testers, things started to go wrong. Jumpgate Evolution’s modern ambitions exceeded Jumpgate’s old-school capabilities, and we knew we were not as close to launch as we needed to be.”
So basically, they’re having some issues with scalability, like any MMO with complex space physics and modern graphics should.
Jumpgate Evolution is on of those games that sounds completely awesome. A modern, Space combat MMO with twitch-based gameplay? Who wouldn’t want that? I’m drawing a blank on the last game that came out that fit that bill, and all I can think of are slower-paced space games (like EVE Online and Sins of a Solar Empire) and the X series — which I’ve never gotten around to playing.
While I’m irritated that the game hasn’t even gone into beta yet (I know John has had a key for about 2 years now), our wonderful Valve/Blizzard overlords have taught us that patience is a virtue, and that good things take time. Also in the forum post, Robertson says “Consider this to be a new beginning to our information flow. Anything you’ve seen up to this point may or may not still exist in the game, and all those details will come out in time.” So… It’s kind of like they’ve announced a new game!
You can be sure we’ll be keeping an eye on this game, hopefully it won’t end up being vaporware like so many other seemingly great projects in this industry.
