Daily Mail Says Its “100 million” Dollar Figure For Red Dead Redemption Was Speculation

The Daily Mail ran an unusually positive story recently on Red Dead Redemption, and cited a pretty sizeable $100 million figure as the total cost of production.

Most of the gaming sites reprinted figure, but today the Daily Mail has told Develop that the $100 million price point is ‘œnot based on anything we have heard about’.

The single line in the story said “Rockstar Games are thought to have spent up to $100million on the long-awaited project”, without citing any sources or analyst estimates. The majority of blogs published the figure, with some even asking whether it was the most expensive game ever made, but the paper said that they had just searched various gaming sites and came to conclusion $100 million was the most spent on a game – GTA IV, and theorised that Red Dead cost $100 million too.

The figure might not be that far off though, with The New York Times citing “industry executives” who claim it was between $80-$100 million, but it’s more the methods that the Daily Mail used to get at the figure that’s funny.

What’s hilarious is that the Daily Mail‘s terrible journalism has filtered down to the rest of the gaming sites and blogs, especially due to the animosity videogames and the Daily Mail usually have for each other. Of course, this is just further evidence to never source from, nor read the Daily Mail.

More like Daily FAIL, right guys? Right?

On a slightly related note, RDR is amazing.

@Naughton: Not out until tomorrow for us Brits. Can’t wait though!

PY Says:

Can’t you guys say it’s awful, to make me feel better? I don’t have enough money for a console, but my PC would love it :(

Grasslunatic Says:

I must resist getting RDR until my exams are over.

Naughton Says:

@PY: It’s aw…fuck, I can’t do it.

Threetem Says:

Sadly it says just as much about the quality of journalism at gaming sites and blogs (present company excepted) as it does about the Daily Mail.

ouched Says:

Its a solid game, wholly recommend it if you aren’t in the “I hate sandbox games” camp. They definitely seem to have learned a few lessons from GTA IV.

If this is a sign of what I can expect out of future Rockstar games, I’m pleased.

adolf shitter Says:

Was this specifically about RDR’s budget or were the Mail just admitting that they make everything up?
