OnLive Coming to The UK, With BT Getting Exclusive Broadband Bundle
The cloud-gaming service OnLive has announced that they will be launching the system in the UK. British Telecom have signed a deal with OnLive, meaning they would be the only ISP to offer the service inclusively with their broadband package, although you’ll still be able to buy it separately from OnLive. BT also bought a 2.6% share in the company.
The service streams the videogame onto a low powered set-box or PC/Mac in the user’s home from powerful servers. This means users do not need expensive processing hardware such as PCs or consoles to play top-end games. It will require a fast and reliable internet connection in order to stream the games, so assumingly BT thinks their service is up to the task.
We’ve yet to properly see OnLive in action, but it’s set to launch this summer in the US. There’s been no word on a UK launch date just yet, but details will be emerging once the US launch is complete. OnLive did say, however, that they had been “operating a test site in Europe from a BT data centre in Wales since 2009′ and so far it’s been ‘œawesome’.
