TIGA “Cautiously Optimistic” That UK Tax Relief Will Still Go Ahead

Despite the UK’s General Election ending in a hung parliament (where nobody has a majority of seats), The Independent Games Developers Association’s (TIGA) CEO Richard Wilson has said that he is ‘œcautiously optimistic’ that tax relief for videogames will still go ahead.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Wilson said despite the fact the Conservatives didn’t produce a promised mini-manifesto on the issue, he pointed out that ‘œLabour and the Liberal Democrats are both signed up behind games tax relief so, in that sense, everything will continue.” He noted that a few Conservative MPs have spoken in favour of tax relief and said that as they were a minority government, ‘œthey wouldn’t want to do anything that would cause them unnecessary unpopularity.’

Only Labour had videogame tax relief written into their manifesto, but a coalition government might sideline certain promised policies in order to accommodate the fact there are two parties. We’ll probably have a fair bit longer to wait until we find out if tax relief for the videogame sector is put on the budget, and right now, it’s obviously not the highest thing on the politician’s lists.
