Gamers Raid Council Poll And Name Street After Lara Croft

Word spread quickly around the internet a while back that there was a chance to vote on what individual should have a stretch of Derby road named after them. This was part of the £32 million project to build a ring road around the British town. Gamers Citizens of the area were offered the opportunity to vote on the name in a poll on the town council website.

One of the options available out of the list of eight names was Lara Croft, the female protagonist from the hit Tomb Raider franchise. The road name “Lara Croft Way” was chosen with a staggering 89% of the 27,000 votes. There will be a second stretch of road named Mercian Way (which finished 2nd in the polls) to honor local soldiers.

Councillor Lucy Care commented that despite her “lack of gaming knowledge”, she accepted that a “majority of 89% for Lara Croft is too overwhelming to ignore.” She continued: “Lara Croft was created in Derby and deserves to stand alongside some of the more traditional icons of the city.”

Congratulations gamers: you’ve quite literally helped put a piece of video gaming history on the map.

What next? ‘Solid Snake Street’? ‘Alan Wake Way’? ‘Crash Bandicoot Crescent’? It’s apolitical incorrectness gone maaaad!

Ace Flibble Says:

They better put a couple of speed bumps on that road.

… Sorry.
