Girl Assaulted in HOME, Australian Telegraph Reports

With nothing better to do in Playstation’s virtual play-world, many have turned to walking up to people, squatting or dancing near them and then proclaiming, likely in a pre-pubescent voice, that they are having sex with the victim. One woman who logged in this Christmas became one of these many victims. Her tale made it past the original forum complaint and into the print edition of the Australian Daily Telegraph who reported on the “online sex assaults”.

The NeoGaf forum helpfully have a scan of the article which, as you may have guessed, seems to have been written by somebody who has very little clue what they’re talking about. They gloss over the fact this stuff is common in games or that there are reporting functions which can lead to those morons upsetting people being banned. They also seem to completely ignore the fact that at any moment, anybody can just turn off the game.

The article reports that in New South Wales there have been no reports of virtual rape to the police. I assume the implication here is that this is a form of rape worthy of police intervention. Personally, I’m  fan of the “ignore” or “report” features in the games. If that doesn’t work you can take your complaint up the channels specifically made to deal with this stuff.

Yes it sucks all this exists, but making the step up from tea-bagging to the police I find rather ludicrous. It’s a known problem and one we should be getting the game’s makers to care more about rather than the law. Bad reporting like this, not least in a country with trust-issues like Australia, is not going to help the situation.

You realise the “Terrorgraph” is the equilient of “The Sun” – basically a tabloid that occasionally posts badly reported, never respected, “news”.

superd1984 Says:

Ridiculous.

What is the law with regards to being ‘pwned’ online and does it violate my human rights?

Philbart999 Says:

She was asking for it.

Hawkeyed One Says:

I’m sorry John, but no, just no. The argument that “anyone can turn off the game” is just insane. So what? People who don’t want to put up with idiots who yell “nigger” at the top of their lungs, “tea-bag” them, and generally act in a sexually disrespectful way should just turn off the game? Gaming isn’t for mature people? So we should just give the online services over to those who don’t deserve it in the first place? Your argument is basically saying “if you’re too weak to stand up to the bully, then don’t go there.” I’m sorry John, but your argument fucking sucks.

Hawkeyed One Says:

Also, Superd, how in hell is it your civil liberty to insult someone via the internet? Now, I know I’m sounding a bit like a videogame demonizing douchenozzel. But I just hate it whenever someone says something bad about videogames, everyone automatically takes the side of the gamer. Always. Let’s be goddamn honest. What the man did was the wrong thing to do. Let’s at least agree on that. Yes, the reaction was overly severe. But the man did the wrong thing.

Heathen Says:

Hear, hear Hawkeyed. And Philbart, she was no more ‘asking for it’ then you were in your toilet escapades last week. Why didn’t you just ‘leave the toilet’ and not go back?. Instead you were so traumatized you pretended you made some witticisms and posted them on the internet.

wardrox Says:

@Hawkeyed One: hey now, I tried to write the article to avoid this and I’m sorry you got the wrong end of the stick. I did not intend to have my opinion be “if you don’t like it, fuck off”. That argument does indeed suck. If you think that’s what I was trying to get across, then that’s my bad writing at play.

I’m saying this BS should be dealt with via the game related channels built specifically to help stop this stuff. I feel that going to the police is an over-reaction and would almost certainly have more of a negative effect on the situation than a constructive one.

@Hawkeyed One

I think you completley misinterpreted what I wrote.

It was taking a shot at the phrase ‘pwned’, pretending that it warrants legal ownership over myself.

Ugh trying to explain a joke can be difficult but surely someone got it?

And how you took from it what your reply suggests I’ll never know.

Embarrassed to live here.

NoZart Says:

does home support muting and/or “invisibilizing” unwanted peers?

Also, we need a device that lets us stab people in the face over the internet. Problem solved. (thats an IRC quote from somewhere that i fully support)

Hawkeyed One Says:

I’m sorry guys ^_^U. I guess I did misread things a bit. I think I kinda read the line “They also seem to completely ignore the fact that at any moment, anybody can just turn off the game” and kinda lost it. Never liked that argument, and probably just subconciously already was biased. I’m pretty sure I was once told “if you don’t like it, then don’t play the game” by some asshole troll in Runescape. Don’t ask why I was playing that monstrosity.
