CES ’10: Sony Banking on 3D, Expanding PSN
It was like a business meeting of top executives… but with Taylor Swift singing a bit. Sony’s CES press conference has just finished and there are only two things of relative interest.
Sony seem to be putting every one of their eggs in the 3D basket. Every person attending the show was given a pair of glasses to watch the the painfully funky videos. Whilst the 3D effect was translated into “blur” when the conference hit uStream there were enough announcements regarding 3D to make its impact very much felt.
Most HD TVs that can go above 60Hz can do 3D, nearly all of Sony’s TVs can, or will be able to and the Playstation 3′s getting itself a nice upgrade to make it 3D compatible. This includes compatibility with 3D Blu-ray discs.
I’d also like to point out that whilst older styles of 3D like the red/blue goofy glasses kind of sucked, the new methods aren’t that terrible. Anyone who’s watched a recent 3D film knows that the tech has come a long way. From my relatively limited playing of several games in 3D, I found it very similar to HD. It’s a small, yet noticeable improvement.
The only other thing worth mentioning is Sony’s push to extend out the Playstation Network (PSN). Kazuo Harai explained this expansion is to ‘œdifferentiate and add value’. As bullshitty as the buzzwords were, the idea of a single log in for all Sony product is quite appealing (though only if you own more than one Sony product). They’re so serious about the new network they set up a new company called Sony Network Entertainment Inc. to take charge. 3D.

goddamn that conference was a draaaag
this obsession with Crecente is getting uncomfortable for the rest of us. ;)
My eyes are incapable of seeing any 3D, so I couldn’t care less about 3D-TVs.
Also aren’t there already three different Sony products, where I can sign into my PSN ID? The only big thing left I can think of are Sony laptops.
The audience seemed to be dead for most of that conference.
