Unreal Engine 3 is Coming to iPhone

soon enough...The game engine is arguably the most important, most time-consuming part of a title’s development. Usually, they are only developed for a specific platform, and take forever to get ported to another, or don’t get ported by the original developer (or, at all). What with all of these copyright laws that prevent people from doing it themselves, this usually means that games won’t get ported to platforms that the developer didn’t originally intend for them to be on unless large sums of money change hands.

Well, Epic is starting to fix this problem by porting their Unreal Engine 3 to the iPhone. Already being available for PC and High-Definition enabled consoles, adding support to the iPhone will give Epic that much extra reach with licensing fees for the platform.

The iPhone is an obvious choice for a developer of a popular engine to expand to. The casual games market has exploded thanks to the platform, and it would be an unwise move to not capitalize on it. The burning question from me though, is when will we see a Gears of War for iPhone?

Dr Steve Brule Says:

I just hope iPhone games don’t start featuring 100,254 shades of brown and gray, as well as every character having arms and legs the size of tree trunks.

Nonetheless, going to make for some interesting dev possibilities.

Unreal 3 on iPhone sounds sweet, but I might avoid it because I didn’t upgrade to the 3GS, and my 3G is starting to chug at times now.

Gears on iPhone would be awesome though “C’mon!”

CtMythic Says:

I would be surprised if the Unreal engine on iPhone bares more than a fleeting resemblance to the original, not only because of hardware limitations but also because Epic are very matey with Microsoft, and the iPhone is a direct competitor to MS devices even before we mention it’s made by Apple.

Wex Says:

@CtMythic: While that’s true, Windows Mobile doesn’t have the reach that the app store does. the iPod touch is arguably the hottest gaming device on the market right now. What does Microsoft have in the Portable space, the Zune HD? Yeah, Windows Mobile phones are fairly popular, but the games aren’t the focus of those devices.

Fallafelsaurus Says:

looks like the texture pop in issues will be even more of an issue. CONTROVERSY
