What Makes You Buy Games You Will Probably Never Play? Steam Holiday Sale!
If you haven’t heard about it yet, Steam are having a stupidly good sale. Everyday they have a new bunch of ridiculously good deals. However be warned; at least 60% of the games you buy from Steam because of a discount will never be played. Of the rest, at least half you will play once, just to remember how crap PC graphics really were.
The best deal I can find today is Torchlight (which we like, and totally liked before it was cool to like) on sale for a measly £3.74 ($5ish I think). Myself, I opted for the Star Wars Premier Pack (11 games for £17) then instantly regretted my decision because I already own most of the games.
If you have an urge you just can’t fight and get yourself the SWPP, here’s a top Negative Gamer tip; in Star Wars: Dark Forces, e opens doors. The game comes with no manual and it took me a worrying amount of time to work this out.
Who else couldn’t resist the urge this festive season? What game do you have now permanently on your “not installed” list?

I picked up Audiosurf, which is a fun little music based game where you race along a track collecting some blocks and match up colors. The catch is that you can use any music present on your system, and the track changes based on the music (i.e. if the tempo of the song speeds up the track speeds up and the blocks get closer together). The concept alone was worth the $2.50, I think.
That’s the only one for now, but I’m sure I’ll be seduced into buying more over the course of this sale.
I’m a sucker for 360 achievements, and with the new burst of live-compatible offerings and games on demand service of Games for Windows Live, I’ve found myself purchasing Where’s Wally, World of Goo and Osmos in the last few days despite them being impossible to play on my Mac when I move back away from home tommorow.
Side note: HSBC changing their UK debit cards from Maestro to Visa has been absolutely fatal. One touch MS Points?!
For some reason I bought Indigo Prophecy even though I played it on PS2.
I fell for it during the thanksgiving (was it thanksgiving? the big discounts before this one) bargains. Got Crysis, Torchlight, Mass Effect, all played 0-1 times so far.
On the other hand I also got L4D1 when it was 75% off and I´ve been playing the hell out of that, and have ordered the insanely cheap amazon.uk L4D2 as well!
In the end I will have had more fun finding the deals than playing the games…is that still a win?
I bought loads of stuff in the sales after Xmas, and am gradually working my way through. Only a few I won’t play, which are mostly crappy games in compilations. The best offer was the THQ Complete Pack which they had for 50% off at £26 (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2539/) – all those games, some of them classics and some of them fairly new releases, for the price of one? Even if I wouldn’t even consider ever playing dross like Frontlines, Juiced 2 or Full Spectrum Nazi Stormtroopers, the rest are well worth looking at, and some, IMHO, are unmissable (STALKER, Titan Quest and CoH).
