Correction: Make That Only 16,000 Apps on Android

Beep Boop SadfaceYesterday I posted an article about how even with 20,000 applications available on the Android, gaming really is terrible on Google’s mobile OS. Whilst this is nothing of any real news, as I would assume nobody would buy a G1 with any impression to the counter, things suck a bit more than I was lead to believe.

The data MobileCrunch (one of the sources for yesterday’s article) used was gathered via the AndroLib directory, not from an official Google statement. An official Google statement has now been released. According to Google there are just over 16,000 applications available.

The discrepancy in figures could, according to TechCrunch who spoke to AndroLab be caused by Google possibly only counting US applications. Or, more likely, that Google are not counting applications removed from the service.

Android’s strength is going to be in sheer numbers, while there’s only one phone running the Apple OS. The gaming climate will be fine eventually

Dr Steve Brule Says:

@Ok_Abacus: This. Google has a habit of starting off slow but making amazing products once things get going.

Google Chrome is a good example of this, when i tried it in 08′ it was clunky and rough around the edges, whereas firefox a more efficient choice at the time.

Chrome has since replaced firefox as my primary browser as it is now much faster than firefox, it simply took some time, and a little help from the Chromium open source project to get some optimization going.

NoZart Says:

in related news, gaming on kitchen appliances is still not so good.

Peter "SurplusGamer" Silk Says:

Far be it from me to suggest that OK_Abacus has ever been completely right about anything, I do at least agree that Android will be fine. It’s a good little OS and it’s very inclusive, these things will help it in the long run and whether there’s good game support or not at the moment… I don’t think that really matters for its success.
