Evony’s Lawyer Quits Case Against Blogger

The hammer means law.Videogame blogger Bruce Everiss was recently sued for libel by the makers of the online game Evony. Essentially Mr.Everiss criticised the tactics Evony use (the tasteful ads and alleged business practices) and Evony didn’t like it.

A suit was filed against Mr.Everiss in New South Wales Australia, a place where neither Evony nor Mr.Everiss are based or even operate.

In yet another strange twist, it seems that Evony’s lawyer, a Mr. Dean Groundswater has fled the case. While we’re unsure why, Everiss guesses it could be that either Evony got rid of him, Groundswater left because the case is un-winnable or “the feeling was mutual” between Evony and Mr. Groundswater.

Evony have gotten another lawyer to fill the empty spot, meaning that the suit will still go on, despite it being delayed. Everiss notes that the new lawyer has curiously added some extra offences against him to the suit:

Evony’s new solicitor, Ric Lucas of Colquhoun Murphy in Canberra has decided to add injurious falsehood and claims under the Fair Trading Act against me. All amazing stuff considering that I have never been to Australia and my blog is not trading.

He also points out that Microsoft is suing a group of gold farmers for click fraud called UGME. Evony claimed to have no links to the company, yet in their statement to the court it says “by UGME”. Curious, no? We’ll see what happens when the case resumes, but in the mean time check out this video for a good round-up of the whole Evony saga.

This whole things just gets stranger. I still find it odd the larger blogs are shying away from all this.

Dr Steve Brule Says:

Im having trouble keeping up with all this legal acrobatics. It seems like Evony is in some ways affiliated with every gold farming or click fraud organization in existence the longer this debacle goes on.

P Marsh Says:

@wardrox: I could see two reasons why this wouldn’t be covered. First being that many major game news sites might have ran Evony adds and this somewhat compounds into shame for possibly exposing readers to scams. Or second being MIcrosoft has asked for a co-operative hush on the whole thing until they come out of the lawsuit with a resounding victory brought about with lawyers and mountains of money.
