Wardrox’s Vlog 2nd November; C5, Eurogamer And Possible Site Subscriptions

I am in the countryside! Sometimes, it smells like poop. This week, only a day late,I talk about Eurogamer, how the site needs to move to the next stage, and an idea I had where you can pay some small amount per month, and have an ad-free NG. Feedback really is appreciated, as it might be a terrible idea.

Personally I’m not bothered by the ads enough to want to pay to get rid of them. On a more serious note, Sinclair C5 FTW!

Citizen Erased Says:

I can see myself paying a dollar…though the advertisements don’t bother me at all so i guess there wouldn’t be much point.

wardrox Says:

Ok, so I can make a load of money from subscriptions if I make the adverts have loads of pop-ups and be generally really shit? Awesome :P

I kid, I kid.

Halidar Says:

Well to be honest, that is the only way I can see paying to get rid of them. They aren’t intrusive in any way, and most of the time I don’t even realize that there are any adverts.

I don’t think people would want to pay to remove 3-4 tiny boxes. I can see how you would like to have a way of the community helping support the site without “donations”, but I don’t see the subscription model as a viable way of doing that. Not when the perk is so tiny.

Citizen Erased Says:

@wardrox: Basically…yeah!
Either that or offer something else along with the subscription thing.

Obviously there are a lot of problems inherent in doing that kind of thing.

From my experience, going down the subscription route means one of a few things:

- Site stays mostly as is. tbh this wouldn’t be any different than asking for constant donations. While it might be fine for the first few months, it won’t be long before people just can’t be bothered. As is the site really wouldn’t offer an incentive to subscribe other than charity, which leads me to…

- Gimping non-subscribers as opposed to rewarding subscribers. Pretty self explanatory, and something I’m sure the site has criticized others for doing. While I’m sure/hope you wouldn’t do this, it should be said that a lot of people (myself included) would deem the site no longer worth our time and stop coming.

- Actually make subscriptions worth while. If you’re going to want to actually draw in subscriptions and keep them going over the long haul, you’re going to have to offer some significant perk. Either that or make the site into a “one stop shop”… a place one would go to instead of the plethora of free sites one visits regularly that quite frankly offer the same thing, and many little things this site wouldn’t.

Glassninja Says:

Yeah, I’m with a lot of the other people who’ve commented about “subscriptions”. You’ve put the ads in very tastefully and they don’t really detract from the site. I may be completely wrong but I just don’t think a lot of people would be willing to pay to get rid of them when they’re this unobtrusive.
